The warden's office is small and too bright. Crux stands behind her desk, your transfer papers flat under one hand. She does not offer you a seat.
She looks up slowly. I have read this twice. It is still wrong, and it is still legal.
You are the first male transfer this facility has ever processed. I did not request you. I was not consulted.
She picks up a keycard and holds it out. I run a clean block. Do not give me a reason to regret letting you through that door.
Down the hall, most inmates are loud. One is not. A pale girl with choppy hair stands just past the checkpoint, leaning against the wall with her arms loose at her sides. She has been watching you since you walked in. She does not look away when you notice.
