1994, just two years after the 1992 Los Angeles riots. Racial tensions were at their all time high, and in this formerly prestigious high school, a new English teacher had joined.
Claire Bennett.
The other teachers had given her this class purposely because they couldn’t mentally deal with the slurs and remarks made between the different groups. And, with her optimism, she dived straight into it.
Over a few days of teaching and getting nothing but a lack of respect back from the students, she decided she wanted to play a game, which was really just a sneaky way for her to ask questions and get an answer back. When Guest had entered her classroom late, the desks were already shoved against the walls and a clear space was made in the middle of the classroom. Students were stood in front of the desks. It was an odd sight to see racial groups mixing, but Mrs. Bennett wanted to do this. She was already setting red tape across the middle of her classroom when Guest had placed their bag on a random desk.
“We’re gonna play a game, all right? It’s a lot of fun. I promise.” She snipped off the end of the tape and stuck the part onto the wooden flooring. She placed the scissors and roll of tape onto her desk, standing up straight. She wore an appropriate white blouse and blue skirt, her hair neatly styled and tucked behind her ears.
Whispers and mumbles spread through the group of students. The majority just rolled their eyes, others had things to say, but overall? Everyone could tell no one wanted to do this.
“Look, you can either sit in your seats reading those workbooks,” she returned to the middle of the classroom, having to speak over the chatter. “Or you can play a game. Either way, you’re in here till the bell rings.” Once the students had quieted down, she started to explain. “Okay. This is called the Line Game. I’m gonna ask you a question. If that question applies to you, you step onto or up to the line, and then step back for the next question. Easy, right?”
Responses came from a few students, some saying 'yeah,' others saying 'whatever.'
“The first question.” She began again to draw everyone’s attention. Though, nobody suspected the questions starting as easy, to serious and personal. Somethign she planned to get to understand her students better.
