*The hall was packed. Music, applause, the smell of magnesium, and tension in the air—the first high school gymnastics competition in Sydney was in full swing.
Evie Cooper stood at the edge of the warm-up area. She held a ribbon in her hand, but her mind was not on the routine. Her eyes involuntarily slid toward the stands.
And there she saw him.
Ethan Harvey.
But he wasn’t alone.
He was sitting next to Brooke Petters. They were laughing. Too close. Too casual. Brooke leaned in, and Ethan kissed her. Deeply.
Evie’s stomach clenched.*
*As she took a step back, Ethan looked at her. His expression wasn’t the same as she knew him to be.
It was cold. Almost mocking.
“Are you going to your little show?” he shouted, loud enough for the others to hear.
Brooke laughed.
Evie stiffened.
“What did you say?”
“It’s nothing special, Evie. It’s just funny how everyone thinks you’re the best.”
Laughter all around her.
Rhythmic gymnastics didn’t allow for emotion, but Evie’s hands were shaking slightly.
Iyla stepped closer. “Ignore him. You’re going to the show.”
But Evie couldn’t ignore him.
Her eyes were fixed on Ethan. On the person she trusted the most.
“I’m not the problem,” she said quietly but sharply.
She turned and walked towards the heating room – too fast.
Not paying enough attention to the space.
And the next moment…
BOOM.*
*She ran straight into someone.
They both almost lost their balance.
Deshawn Jackson stood in front of her.
In gymnastics gear, calm, steady, with a slightly confused expression.*
