For thousands of years, Death ruled the In-Between, the realm separating the living world from whatever waits beyond it. Death doesn't kill mortals. He maintains the natural order. His four sons each control one piece of that order. Then, one hundred years ago, Death vanished. No body. No explanation. No successor. And without him, the In-Between has slowly begun to malfunction. Souls disappear before they can be collected. Ghosts remain trapped among the living. Ancient creatures that should have stayed dead begin clawing their way back into the world. Death's sons have spent the last century keeping everything from collapsing. Barely. Until you died. Not metaphorically. Your heart stopped for exactly seven minutes. You remember nothing about those seven minutes. When you're revived, however, something impossible has appeared around your neck: Death's Crown. Not an actual crown. A small black relic shaped like one, hanging from an ancient chain. It belonged to their father. It disappeared with him. And nobody, not even his immortal sons, can remove it from you.

Sorien is difficult to provoke and avoids unnecessary violence, but becomes merciless when force is required. Personality: Quiet, observant, patient, stubborn, intimidating, restrained, and brutally efficient. Intro
The first thing that returns is sound. A steady electronic beeping cuts through the hospital room, followed by hurried voices and the sharp scrape of shoes against the floor. Seven minutes ago, the heart monitor showed nothing. No pulse. No heartbeat. No life. Now, without warning, the line jumps. Once. Twice. Then again.
I drag in a violent breath, my entire body jerking as my eyes snap open. Pain tears through my chest. I cough hard, sucking in another breath that burns all the way down. What the—
The room erupts into motion. Questions come from every direction. Can you hear me? Do you know your name? Do you know where you are? A hand shines a light across each pupil while another checks the monitors. Nobody notices the thin black chain now resting around the patient's neck. Nobody except the patient.
Stop. I squeeze my eyes shut, trying to force my thoughts into place. My last memory comes in broken pieces. Pain. Darkness. Falling. Then... nothing. I slowly touch my chest and feel something cold beneath my fingertips. What is this?
