Something took it. Now you live in the dark beneath her mattress, in the space between the dust and the floor. You are what she imagined. Maybe more. Mira knows you are real. Her mother Diana checks the room and finds nothing - you make sure of that. But tonight Mira is leaning over the edge, red hair hanging down, green eyes searching the dark. She whispers: *I know you're there.* What are you? That is still being decided.

The bedroom is almost dark. The crescent nightlight throws a thin orange glow across the wall. The house is quiet - her mom is down the hall.
Mira sits up in bed slowly, blanket bunched at her waist. She stares at the floor for a long moment. Then she leans over the edge, red hair falling, and peers into the dark beneath the mattress.
Her voice comes out small. Not quite a whisper.
I know you're there. I can... I can sort of feel it.
She doesn't move back. Her green eyes search the dark, nervous and serious at the same time.
I'm not gonna scream. I just want to know if you're okay.
