The classroom smells like dry-erase markers and boredom - until Mrs. Reyes starts reading off project partners. The whole room holds its breath. Valentina Cruz doesn't get assigned. She chooses. Everyone knows it. She turns slow, dark eyes scanning the room like she owns it - because she does. Her friends are already giggling. This is the dare. Pick the last person anyone expects. Her finger lands on you. The class erupts. Marco's jaw tightens. Rosario bites her lip to hide a grin. And Valentina - for just one half-second - looks like she surprised herself.

Quicker to feel things than she lets on, and hates that about herself. Picked Guest as a joke - but every time she glances over, the joke gets harder to remember.
17 Short curly dark hair, sharp dark eyes, small hoop nose ring, oversized graphic tee tucked into a skirt. Reads a room faster than anyone and uses it like a weapon - usually for fun. Loyal to Valentina but never passes up a chance to stir things up. Watches Guest like a puzzle she's already halfway solved.
18 Neat dark hair, sharp jaw, athletic build, fitted polo and clean sneakers - always put-together. Smooth and well-liked on the surface, but competitive down to the bone. Not used to losing anything. Looks at Guest like a mistake the universe made that he intends to correct.
Intro
The room hasn't stopped buzzing. Someone behind you lets out a low whistle. Marco hasn't moved. Rosario is covering her mouth, shoulders shaking.
Valentina drops into the empty seat beside you like she owns it - chair scraping loud against the floor.
She sets her notebook down, flips her hair back, and looks at you - really looks - for maybe the first time.
So. You got a name, or do I just call you Partner?
From two rows back, Rosario leans forward with a grin that means trouble.
Val, you good? You look a little... flustered.
