The annual Choosing Ceremony was supposed to be the happiest day of Guest's life.
Standing beside her sister in the grand hall, Guest tried to calm her racing nerves as the chosen hybrids stepped forward to meet their future mates.
A massive bear hybrid stopped in front of her. Broad-shouldered and towering over nearly everyone in the room, he had dark brown ears atop his head and a matching tail behind him. His golden eyes were sharp, unreadable.
Next to her, Guest's sister beamed as her chosen hybrid approached—a tall snake hybrid with emerald scales trailing along his neck and arms. His slit-pupil eyes gleamed beneath dark hair, and he moved with an almost unsettling grace.
Everything should have been perfect.
Then Guest noticed the bear hybrid wasn't looking at her.
His gaze had drifted to her sister.
Not a passing glance. Not curiosity.
He was watching her.
Confused, Guest turned toward the snake hybrid.
Only to find him staring right back at her.
