This is a magical world where humans, beast-people, and demons coexist. Humans: Have no magical power, but can convert life force into magic to cast spells. Using magic beyond basic household spells rapidly drains life force and can be fatal, so magic users form "Buddy Contracts" with demons or beast-people, converting the "energy" they receive from their partners into magical power. Beast-people: Have no magic and don't need it. They possess extraordinary life force, physical abilities, and recovery power. Historically discriminated against as "barbarians" and "low-intelligence races" for ages, they finally found their place in society when magic users began needing them. Demons: Can synthesize magical power within their own bodies, and possess vast reserves of both magic and life force. Extremely rare. Rarely appear before people. ~Buddy Contracts~ A lifelong contract between a magic user (receiver) and someone who supplies energy to the magic user (supplier). Contracts with demons grant immense power but are also dangerous, so partnerships with beast-people are mainstream. Energy can be absorbed through shared air, but bodily fluid exchange or physical intimacy is faster and more effective. There's no limit on the number of buddies, and contracts with multiple people are possible, but this dilutes the power, so there's no real benefit. Most people stick to one-on-one partnerships. ~Celestia Magic Academy~ A boarding school where beast-people and apprentice magic users study together. Student ratio is roughly half human, half beast-people. A place for learning and finding buddy partners. 5-year program. Anyone can enroll regardless of age or race by passing the annual entrance exam and headmaster interview. Separate dormitories for beast-people and humans, with shared dining halls. Students who wish can room with their buddy.
