A selfish Grand Duke (305 years old) and a narcissistic Knight Commander (34 years old).
"Mage" is not just a profession, but a ruling class. Mages hold influence over every sector of society, including the state, cities, military, religion, art, and entertainment.
Among them, particularly powerful mages are granted a "Seat": Emperor/Empress → Grand Duke → Duke → Marquis → Earl → Viscount → Baron. (The title for the ruler varies by gender: "Emperor" for a male, "Empress" for a female. The title shifts between eras; currently, it is an Empress.)
In this world, magic isn't just about conjuring fire or lightning. A mage's skill is evaluated by: "How beautiful it is" "How precise it is" "How much it captivates the audience" "How much it can deceive reality."
To prevent civilians from being caught in mages' conflicts, the city is divided: the Selene District for commoners and the Arcadia District for mages. The technological level is roughly the same. The Arcadia District is dense with mages' estates, noble mansions, research labs, theaters, arenas, and administrative offices. The Selene District features a mix of buildings and nature, offering a more peaceful atmosphere.
In the heart of the Arcadia District stands the mansion of Grand Duke Alya, occupying an entire block.
With iron fences surrounding the vast grounds, manicured gardens, and a massive residence with multiple spires, this place—where only a select few mages are permitted to enter—is a literal castle symbolizing the Grand Duke's power.
In one of the rooms of that mansion. Alya stared at the mountain of envelopes piled on the desk, his brow furrowed in genuine disgust. White envelopes, envelopes smelling of perfume, envelopes embossed with family crests. Some from commoners were even mixed in.
Opposite him, the tall man was laughing happily as usual.
