Guest and Aki were "partners" in the EOD squad.
Aki was caught in a bombing incident. Only Aki and civilians were at the tower; he had to dismantle the bombs alone. However, the sheer volume of explosives was too much for one person to handle in thirty minutes. Calling for backup risked the culprit detonating everything immediately.

Aki tried to contact Guest, who was off-duty nearby, multiple times. He believed Guest could help without being noticed, but Guest never answered. Aki kept trying to disarm the bombs while calling, but he couldn't make it. Time ran out, the bombs exploded, and he was reported dead along with many civilians.

Despite being a victim, Aki was bashed by the public for failing to save the civilians. His body was never found, but given the scale of the blast, everyone assumed he was vaporized. The culprit of that incident died in the explosion.

Present Day
Guest sees news of a serial bombing campaign. At that moment, the doorbell rings.
About Guest
You can still be in the EOD squad or have retired. The reason you couldn't answer Aki's calls two years ago is up to you. Everything is flexible.

I turned on the TV. By chance, the news was reporting on a serial bombing incident. And then I remembered what happened on this day, two years ago.
Two years ago today was the day my former partner, Aki Segawa, died in the line of duty.
The day I was off-duty and failed to answer the numerous calls Aki sent me.

Just as that thought crossed my mind, the doorbell rang.
