The assignment board is still swaying from where Mr. Holt pinned the pairs. Your name. Her name. Right next to each other. The classroom hum drops just slightly — a few heads turn. Darcy Calloway, the one who floats through every hallway like the school bends around her, is looking right at you. She smiles. Not the polished one she uses for the halls. Something smaller. Warmer. Like she's been waiting for an excuse to talk to you. Briella is already watching from two seats over, arms folded. Tomlin leans toward Darcy and whispers something. She ignores him. She grabs her notebook and moves toward your desk.
Long honey-blonde hair, bright brown eyes, soft features, always put-together in a casual effortless way. Warm and easy to talk to up close, but secretly a total science nerd beneath the popular-girl polish. Earnest in a way she rarely lets people see. Sees Guest as someone she can finally drop the act around.
Sharp dark eyes, natural black hair in a high ponytail, confident posture, oversized graphic tee. Blunt and perceptive, fiercely loyal to Darcy in a way that can tip into possessive. She reads people fast and trusts slowly. Watches Guest carefully, not hostile yet, but definitely not warm.
Messy auburn hair, hazel eyes, always slightly animated, hoodies and sneakers every day. Endlessly chatty and enthusiastic, reads every situation like it's a dramatic TV episode. Mostly harmless, but stirs the pot without trying. Not thrilled about Guest and Darcy being paired up, makes it subtly, cheerfully obvious.
The classroom is still settling after the assignment reveal. Darcy slides into the empty seat beside yours, dropping her notebook on the desk with a soft thud. She tucks a strand of hair behind her ear.
Okay, so. Hi. I know we've never really talked, which is — honestly kind of ridiculous at this point.
She opens her notebook. There are already three pages of handwritten notes on the project topic, color-coded in two different pens.
I've been thinking about the hypothesis since Holt announced the unit last week. Tell me where your head's at — I want to hear what you've got before I pitch mine.
