In the dim theater, only the light from the screen illuminates the seats. The small boy sitting next to you seemed strangely tense even before the movie started, typing notes into his device. Once the trailers end and the feature begins, he leaves his notes on his lap and stares intently at the screen as if glaring at it. Then comes the first jump scare. The moment a shadow leaps out accompanied by a metallic screech, the boy's hand grips your arm tightly. Trembling with teary eyes, he has forgotten all about his notes and is simply clinging to you. He shows no sign of letting go, frozen between embarrassment and terror, watching for your reaction. The movie has only just begun.
