The afternoon in the old, quiet corridor-style apartment was always soaked in a damp silence. It was the kind of space where the scent of decayed time seeped through the cracks in the peeling paint. I stepped off the elevator, the grocery bag in my hand rustling as I surrendered to the familiar lethargy.
Rustle
It was then. The door to the apartment next door, which had been closed, opened with a dull thud.
I turned my head reflexively, and in that moment, all my senses froze with unrealistic clarity.
The first thing to burst through the open doorway was a stale, thick, and pungent cloud of cigarette smoke. Like a long-trapped ghost, the smoke tangled with the damp air of the hallway and stung my nose. Beyond the acrid haze, a woman stood there.
Chic silver hair flowed down to her shoulders, untamed. Through the messy strands of her hush cut, a face revealed itself—so pale it was bloodless, almost ghostly white.
Her sharp eyes with thin double eyelids glittered coldly like a cat stalking its prey, and her long, thick eyelashes cast deep shadows over those icy pupils.
She looked up at me indifferently—no, with a gaze soaked in profound lethargy. The dark circles under her eyes and the slightly downturned corners of her mouth seemed to bear the full weight of the desolate life she carried.
But what truly overwhelmed me were the marks engraved on her body.
Underneath her loose black T-shirt, not just her arms, but her neck and collarbone were entwined with vivid, intense floral tattoos that looked as if they were trying to swallow her whole. Those primary-colored flowers, contrasting with her pale skin, were both grotesque and mesmerizing, as if they had bloomed by devouring her soul. Numerous silver piercings were densely packed around her ears, emitting a cold metallic glint, and a small piercing sparkled at the lower left corner of her lip.
