She has medium to dark brown colored hair that falls down to her mid back with bangs swept off to the right, a slender figure, fair skin, rosy cheeks, and big chocolate brown eyes that possess purity and innocence, as noted by Yukiji. For clothes, aside from being generally seen in her school uniform, she's shown to wear casual and girly clothing, followed by kimonos or any formal wear when the situation calls for it. Due to her average appearance, Nanami is often seemed to be overlooked by human boys. Nanami has a kind, gentle, understanding and caring heart for those around her, even if they are bad people or Yokai. She often cries when things get too hard or when someone is hurt or in trouble, and it has been noted that her crying has had its effect on humans and Yokai alike who don't fancy it when she cries or is upset.

When a powerless girl named Nanami turns up on the shrine's doorstep bearing the wayward god's mark, Tomoe is furious and refuses to serve as her familiar and vanishes, deciding to use his freedom to lead a life filled with sloth, drinking and debauchery. After Nanami kisses him, forcefully making him her familiar, he was enraged at first but still goes along and accepts his duties as the new familiar of the new Land God. Tomoe is an extremely gorgeous man. His over-the-top beautiful appearance earns him a bevy of admirers wherever he goes. He usually merely tolerates the attention, rejecting any deeper connection. Yokai ages very slowly. Though he is actually several hundred years old, Tomoe appears to be in his late teens or early twenties. His hair is silver-white, normally worn short but in ages past he allowed it to grow quite long. His ears are large and fox-like, and he is able to manipulate them in a similar fashion. His eyes are angled similarly to a fox's, with violet fox-like pupils that darken with strong emotion. He also appears to wear eyeliner but that's most likely not true. He has a very fluffy, full, white tail. Wild fox Tomoe dressed with considerable flare in a dramatic, flame-patterned kimono, his hair long and loose and with a long samurai sword at his side. As a shinshi he is more conservative, wearing primarily a white yukata with a somber-colored haori in black or dark blue. It is clear he feels most comfortable in traditional clothing and goes barefoot as much as possible.

Mizuki has white slightly parted hair. He has green snake-like eyes, white eyelashes and pale skin. He is seen typically wearing Japanese traditional clothes, just like Tomoe (Mizuki's rival and fellow familiar). Mizuki had led a very sheltered life until he met Nanami Momozono, something Tomoe scathingly points out on more than one occasion. Inexperience not withstanding, Mizuki can be very clever and even manipulative. He still loves Nanami in his own way, and so is very jealous of her obvious affection for Tomoe. He has tried several times in various ways to drive a wedge between them, without success. He is extremely naive and is shown to possess a child-like wonder and innocence in the ways of the human world and the things in it. As he continues to spend time with his new land god and her friends his world has expanded, but he remains by and large a rather goofy, lovable baby.

Kei is the tallest with long orange hair that is almost as long as Nanami Momozono's hair and dirty green eyes. Kei is the most mature but also the most hot-tempered who is intuitive and picked up on the fact Nanami Momozono liked Tomoe. Kei gave advice to Nanami on how she could get his attention. She is rarely ever seen without her cellphone, on which she constantly sends text messages at a rapid pace; most of the time she does not even bother to glance at the screen. She spends a lot of time dating boys although most of her relationships do not last long.

Ami is described as a small girl who is short for her age. She has chin length orange/red hair that end in massive permed curls above her shoulders. She has light brown eyes with a dark brown iris. Ami wears her school uniforms at school, but going out with her friends that she is seen wearing casual and cute clothing. Ami is a naive, but bubbly and gentle girl that enjoys spending time with her friends. She cares about her friends and most times that she is able to notice when her friends seem sad or are out of it.

Kurama is a very charismatic yokai and due to his popularity/beauty, very arrogant and selfish as well, seeing that he had attempted to catch and eat Nanami Momozono's heart so that he could become the Land God.

Kotetsu has a very joyous and happy personality. He is also very caring and he worries about Tomoe and Nanami's well being. His personality is very similar to Onikiri and they often act and speak in perfect synchronisation. She is normally a miniature shrine spirit with a girlish mask on that has closed eyes with medium-sized lips and girlish mask hair. Onikiri dons a plain, white kimono with fire-ish looking designs on the end sleeves and kimono. She also dons a brown-grayish bow on her kimono, and just like Kotetsu - she is barefooted.
