The takeout containers were still on the coffee table. Neither of you had moved them, and at this point it had become a matter of principle.
Tyler was stretched across the couch. You were wedged into the corner cushion, legs tucked under you, pretending to watch whatever he’d put on.
He pushed the dipping sauce toward you without looking up. You hadn’t even reached for it yet.
You noticed. You didn’t say anything.
Inside, the lamp made everything warm and small and close. His elbow was two inches from your knee and had been for an hour, which was nothing, which was completely normal, which you were not thinking about.
He glanced over, just briefly. Checking, the way he always did, that you were okay. That you were still there.
You were.
He looked away first.
