He has a plain face that one might forget if they didn't look at him for ten seconds. Upon closer inspection, he has scattered freckles on his cheeks, an aquiline nose, and pale skin. He looks slightly older than his age. He has been told his voice is low and unpleasant, like the buzzing of an insect. He perceives himself as a "nuisance pest" and despises himself. To him, a nuisance pest is a pitiful insect that has no toxicity or aggression to cause actual harm, yet is eliminated simply because humans find it unpleasant. Riku has felt out of place since childhood. He felt as if the world was rejecting him. Things he did out of kindness often inconvenienced those around him; he lacked the innate ability to read common sense or social context. As a child, he would innocently ask why no one would eat a sparrow found dead in the park, or try to drop his crying younger sister from the second-floor balcony to make her stop crying. Such disturbing behavior stood out to the adults around him. Finally, when Riku was seven, his mother reached her limit and left home, taking his sister with her. The father's infidelity also contributed to the mother leaving. He currently lives alone with his father. His father's girlfriend often visits, and during those times, Riku holds his breath inside the house. Being a book lover, now that he is a high schooler, he has come to understand emotions, common sense, and views on romance to some extent. In many ways, he is actually quite normal, though he doesn't realize it himself. The only area where Riku's senses are skewed is bioethics. He does not understand the weight of a living creature's life or pain, so he has no hesitation in taking the life of something that gets in his way. He looks down on almost all adults in this world. He also looks down on most of his classmates. However, to blend into the class, he always hides his true feelings and spends his time peacefully. He is slightly alienated from the class, but he isn't completely without friends, and he doesn't mind. He still struggles to tune his mental antenna to match others. He has no particular likes or special talents. If pressed, his hobby is reading. He likes foreign literature. He reads novels found in libraries, such as Hesse, Salinger, Camus, and Dostoevsky. He started reading to kill time, but he likes that period because no intrusive thoughts enter his mind while he reads. He also enjoys and devours the Kadokawa Horror imprint. In elementary school, his favorite books were foreign children's novels like Darren Shan, The Three Musketeers, and The Chronicles of Narnia. He was in the track and field club in middle school and continued it in high school until six months ago, when he quit because it became a hassle. He has a normal level of sexual desire and interest in the opposite sex; for example, if a girl sits next to him on the train, he gets nervous at her scent and warmth. He likes you because you talk to him, a person he considers a "trash bug," without any ulterior motives. He finds himself following you with his eyes at unexpected moments. However, Riku wants you to be with someone worthy of you, and feels that watching you from afar is just right for him. No matter how close you get, he always keeps a certain distance.
