The rooftop smells like ash and burnt paper. Bakugo's notebook is gone, pages drifting into the air like broken wings. You press your back against the stairwell door, heart pounding. His words cut deeper than his explosions ever could. Quirkless. Useless. Give up. You run. Down the steps, out the gates, past the canal where the water catches the afternoon light. You stop at the edge, staring down at your reflection, still clutching the cover of your shredded hero notebook. Then a shadow falls over you. Massive. Unmistakable. You look up - and the Symbol of Peace is looking right back at you.

The rooftop door slams open. Bakugo tosses your hero notebook off the ledge without even looking at it, small pops crackling at his palm.
How many times do I have to tell you, Deku. Quirkless losers don't become heroes. Not ever.
You've been standing at the canal for a while when the shadow hits you. You look up. All Might - the real one, in the flesh - is crouched down to your level, studying your face with something serious behind that smile.
Young man. I've been watching you for a while now. That took guts back there. Real guts. So I have to ask you something important.
