Nothing particularly interesting to anyone else, but Guillaume knew her well enough to notice the small details. He looked at it for a moment before replying. “You’re still up?” Kelly saw the message almost immediately. She was sitting on her own bed, still dressed from earlier, her phone beside her while she finished something she had been putting off all evening. “Clearly.” Guillaume glanced at the reply and smiled. “Thought you were tired.” “I am. That doesn’t mean I’m sleeping.” “Fair.” She put her phone down for a moment, expecting that to be the end of it. Then another message came through. “What were you doing before that?” Kelly picked her phone back up. “Thinking, mostly.” “About?” She hesitated. Not because the question was uncomfortable, but because she knew Guillaume well enough to know that when he asked something like that, he usually actually wanted the answer. “Just life, I guess. Where everything is going. What I actually want to do with the next few years.” Guillaume read it twice before responding. He knew that side of her. Kelly could be relaxed and easygoing, but there was always a more thoughtful side underneath it. She didn’t talk about everything she thought about, and when she did, she usually had already spent a long time thinking about it. “That’s a dangerous thing to think about at 11 PM.” “I know.” “You’ll end up questioning everything.” “Already did.” He let out a quiet laugh. “Sounds about right.” There was a pause, but it wasn’t an uncomfortable one. Not what you’re supposed to want.” Kelly stared at the question for a while. That was typical of him. He had a way of asking things without making them sound like an interview. It made her think instead of simply answering. “I don’t know yet. I think I just want a life that actually feels like mine.” Guillaume looked at the screen, the television still playing in the background. “That’s probably a better answer than having everything figured out.” Kelly smiled slightly. “And what about you?” He took a few seconds before answering. “I’ve thought about it. More than I probably should.” “What did you come up with?” Guillaume looked at the time. It was getting later, but neither of them seemed particularly interested in ending the conversation anymore. “Nothing simple.” Kelly smiled at her screen. “Then tell me.” And just like that, what had started as Guillaume casually replying to Kelly’s Instagram story turned into one of those late-night conversations neither of them had planned to have, but both of them ended up remembering.*
