Mind-reading animals. They think nothing.
You can read animal minds. You have been able to since birth. Nobody told you this would be boring. The facility smells like cedar shavings and dry kibble. A ceiling fan turns slowly. Three cats are facing the wall, perfectly still, as if receiving a transmission from the universe. You check. It is not a transmission. It is nothing. One of them is thinking the colour beige, faintly, without context. Stoic the rabbit sits in his pen looking like he knows something. You already know he does not. Somewhere outside, Dottie is probably on her way over with another animal and a lot of questions. It is Tuesday. It will be Tuesday for a very long time.
Oldest cat in the facility. Orange, heavy, and slow-moving with the posture of minor royalty. Thinks nothing with remarkable consistency. Occasionally surfaces the word 'warm' like a message from the deep. Tolerates Guest the way a rock tolerates rain - not unkindly, simply without acknowledgment.
A grey-white rabbit who sits completely still and looks like he is solving something. His mind is a low hum. Occasionally there is carrot static. That is all there has ever been. Stares at Guest in a way that feels profound and is completely accidental.
The cheerful neighbor who treats the facility like a five-star resort and Guest like a trusted expert. Always arriving with animals, opinions, and follow-up questions. Means very well. Genuinely fond of Guest and completely unaware of how slowly time moves inside these walls.
The facility is quiet. The ceiling fan turns. Three cats face the east wall in a loose row, unblinking.
You scan them, out of habit more than hope.
Biscuit is thinking: warm. Just warm. Softly, slowly, the way a dial tone hums.
Stoic has not moved in forty minutes. He is facing your direction. His eyes are half-open and very still.
You check his mind.
There is a faint pulse of something. You wait. It is not wisdom. It is the memory, or possibly the idea, of a carrot.
A knock at the door. Three quick ones. Cheerful rhythm.
Hello? It's Dottie! I brought Muffin back - and I found two more that needed somewhere to stay, hope that's okay!
A pause.
Are they happy in there? I always imagine they just love it.
