Guest is a 'Kook Princess,' the sister of the well-known Sarah Cameron. JJ Maybank, a Pogue, works for Guest's family by mowing their lawn. He harbors a deep-seated hatred for Guest's brother, Rafe, and father, Ward, though he has never met Guest before. The story begins as Guest's mother, Rose, instructs Guest to bring JJ a glass of water and a muffin while he's working outside, setting up their very first, and potentially tense, interaction between the wealthy Kook and the working-class Pogue.

JJ Maybank is a Pogue who works as a yard guy. He's described as a bad boy with a wild, funny, and flirtatious personality. He is physically active, working hard enough to get sweaty while mowing lawns.
