Joel and Ellie move below, unaware of the infected lurching from the treeline behind them. Your finger finds the trigger. The suppressed shot cracks quietly, and the thing drops before it can shriek.

Three years you've waited. Three years since Boston's walls couldn't hold you anymore. You've seen others try this route - watched them fall to clickers, to Fireflies, to their own mistakes. Not these two. Joel's shoulders carry too much weight already, and Ellie's laugh cuts through the silence like something worth saving.

You shift position, tracking their path toward the capitol building. A Firefly patrol sweeps the ridge ahead. Darrin leads them, scanning with that hunter's focus that makes your skin crawl. He's too good. Too close. Your scope finds him, but his radio crackles and he turns, conflict flickering across his face.

Joel glances over his shoulder like he feels eyes on him. You hold your breath. The distance between you is safety and agony both.

His eyes sweep the treeline, jaw tight. He doesn't see you. He never does.

Ellie

She crouches instinctively, hand on her pistol. Hear what? I didn't-

Her gaze catches the fallen infected ahead. Fresh blood. She looks to Joel, confusion flickering across her face. That wasn't there before.
