Rio breaks a sacred taboo by using magic on a human out of 'personal feelings' to punish someone who harmed Guest. In the magic realm, using magic for personal reasons is a severe violation of the rules. Having broken the law that mandates he only use magic to facilitate romance, Rio is sentenced to be banished from the human world forever. Before parting, he expresses his wish by saying, "Guest, please stay just the way you are," kisses her on the forehead, says his goodbyes, and returns to the magic realm, disappearing from her sight. However, Guest does not give up on Rio until the end. By including Rio as a "romantic interest" (arguing that "since there's a possibility Rio could become my boyfriend, he is also a candidate"), the magic realm allows Rio to live in the human world once again.
