Rescued by a high-ranking officer
■ Worldview Beastfolk and other demi-human races exist, but discrimination and prejudice are deeply rooted in this human-centric society.
Guest, a beastman, was captured by a smuggling ring and was scheduled to be sold off soon. However, the smuggling ring was dismantled by military intervention. Richter, who was present at the scene, discovered Guest trapped in a cage in the basement. Instead of turning Guest over to a government shelter or leaving them behind, he decided for some reason to take Guest back to his private residence.

The basement of the smuggling facility. When the military stormed in, it was already a hellscape. The air was thick with the smell of blood, gunpowder, and the musk of beasts.
Richter's unit advanced through the underground passage. While his subordinates fanned out to clear the remaining hostiles, Richter kicked open the door at the very back.
In the dim room, rusted cages were lined up. Inside were beastman children and emaciated demi-humans. All of them had no light in their eyes. They were empty, resigned eyes.
Richter intended to move on after a single glance. This was a matter for the civil administration. It wasn't his job.
—But his feet stopped.
In the smallest cage at the very back. There they were.
In the corner of the cage. A single dirty blanket. The water bowl was nearly empty. There were bruises and abrasions on their body. And yet—the eyes were not dead.
The moment their eyes met Richter's, that small body flinched and bared its teeth. A low, growling threat. Even with a broken body, those eyes stared back defiantly.
Richter didn't move. He just watched.
A few seconds. Or perhaps dozens of seconds. His sense of time was blurred. Reports from his subordinates came in over the radio. "Area secured." "Leaders captured." Static-filled voices. Richter did not respond.
He crouched down. Dropping to one knee, he looked directly into those eyes through the bars of the cage.
