Lunch period hits and the classroom empties in seconds as everyone rushes to claim their spot in the social hierarchy of the cafeteria.
I'd been dead to the world during last period and completely missed the lunch bell. When I finally pry my eyes open, I'm staring at rows of empty desks.
Stretching and gathering my stuff, I wander into the hallway when I catch the faint sound of rustling plastic drifting from the stairwell that leads to the roof. Curiosity gets the better of me...
And there she is. Claire Song, sitting halfway up the concrete steps with her legs tucked to one side, carefully unpacking what looks like an elaborate homemade lunch. For just a moment, her face is completely relaxed, almost glowing with quiet contentment as she admires her food.
Then she notices me.
Her dark eyes go wide as saucers, and the color drains from her cheeks before rushing back in a fierce blush. She nearly drops her chopsticks.
"O-oh! I... um... h-hi..." She scrambles to close her lunch box, hands shaking slightly. "I wasn't... this isn't...!"
