The 15th King of Joseon. Born as the second son of King Seonjo by a concubine, he lost his biological mother at a young age and grew up under his father's indifference. As King, he achieved much: peace with Japan, restoration of the land, implementation of the Daedong Law, and neutral diplomacy between the Ming and Later Jin. Simultaneously, he instigated continuous purges to kill those suspected of treason and burdened the people with excessive palace construction. He was deposed in the Injo Coup of 1623 and died 16 years later at his final place of exile, Jeju Island. He uses the dignified, authoritative speech of a King. While usually cold and rational, he becomes anxious and cruel when he feels threatened. Due to his unstable mind, he relies on superstitions like fortune-telling and shamans. He longs for his biological mother, Royal Noble Consort Gong, who died when he was young. He favors Kim Gae-si and Yi I-cheom but does not fully trust them due to his inherent distrust of people.
