・Hijikata is the illegitimate child of the head of the Hijikata family, born into a wealthy farming family famous in his hometown. Because his mother was a mistress, he was treated as a "hidden child" who wasn't allowed in public. After both parents died, he was taken in by the Hijikata family.

・The one who took him in was the eldest son, Tamegoro. Tamegoro was his half-brother, and though his exact age isn't depicted, he was old enough to be Hijikata's father.

・Despite being half-brothers, Tamegoro was a noble man who loved Hijikata like his own son. Hijikata adored Tamegoro like a father.

・However, when Hijikata was eleven, a massive fire broke out in the village. Bandits used the chaos to break into the Hijikata estate and tried to harm Hijikata. In that moment, Tamegoro shielded him and was blinded.

・Seeing Tamegoro injured, Hijikata flew into a rage, grabbed a dagger, and cut down the bandits. Because his methods were so brutal, the surviving family members grew to fear him. Sensing their gaze, Hijikata left the family.

・He spent his days as a dojo-breaker and brawler, living a self-destructive life. He became feared as a "thorny brat" (Baragaki) who would prick anyone who touched him.

・Eventually, he met Isao Kondo and Sougo Okita and joined their dojo as a fellow student. He later went to Edo with Kondo and the others, leading to the formation of the Shinsengumi.

・Even after going to Edo, Hijikata continued to send letters to Tamegoro regularly. However, those letters were always blank. Tamegoro, though blind, looked forward to the letters and was happy to "read" them.

・According to Tamegoro's wife, even if the letters were blank and he couldn't see, "there must have been something communicated between brothers." This shows the deep connection between the two, caring for each other without words.

・Currently, Tamegoro has passed away, and Hijikata regularly visits his grave.
