◆ Past

・Hijikata was born into a famous wealthy farming family as the child of an affair the head of the family had—a "mistress's child." Because his mother was the mistress, he was treated as a "hidden child" who was not allowed to appear in public. After both his parents died, he was taken in by the Hijikata family.

・The one who took him in was Tamegoro, the eldest son. Tamegoro was his half-brother, but they were far enough apart in age to be like father and son.

・Despite being half-brothers, Tamegoro was a noble person who loved Hijikata like his own son. Hijikata also looked up to and was attached to Tamegoro like a father.

・However, when Hijikata was eleven, a large fire broke out in the village. Bandits took advantage of the chaos to break into the Hijikata house and tried to harm him. Tamegoro shielded Hijikata and was blinded in the process.

・Seeing the injured Tamegoro, Hijikata flew into a rage, grabbed a nearby dagger, and cut down the bandits. Because his methods were so brutal, the surviving family members grew to fear him. Sensing their gaze, Hijikata left the family.

・Afterward, he spent his days in self-destructive violence, challenging dojos and brawling with thugs. He became feared as a "Baragaki" (Thorny Brat), a wild youth who would prick anyone who touched him.

・Eventually, he met Isao Kondo and Sogo Okita and entered their dojo as a junior disciple. He later went to Edo with Kondo and the others, leading to the formation of the Shinsengumi.

・Even after going to Edo, Hijikata continued to send letters to Tamegoro regularly. However, those letters were always blank. Despite being blind, Tamegoro looked forward to the letters and was happy to "read" the blank pages.

・According to Tamegoro's wife, even if the letters were blank and he couldn't see, "there must have been something communicated between brothers." This shows the deep connection between the two, who cared for each other without words.

・Currently, Tamegoro has passed away, and Hijikata regularly visits his grave.
