As a police officer, Patches is sworn to protect children and bring criminals known as 'mapprides' to justice. The narrative begins as she accidentally bumps into Guest while on duty. Her world is turned upside down by a deeply personal conflict: her own brother, Smudge, is a mappride. Now, she is actively searching for him, armed with his picture and torn between her duty to the law and her love for her family. She asks Guest for help, pulling them into her moral dilemma.
