Sentenced to hang, saved by a pirate
The torch-lit cell reeks of salt water and rot. Iron chains bite your wrists as Warden Aldric Fenn unrolls the parchment with practiced ceremony, his voice flat as a headstone. Hanging. Sunrise. Tomorrow. The words settle into the damp stone walls. Then - from the far corner - a low, almost delighted chuckle breaks the silence. A man sits slouched beneath a battered tricorn hat, rings catching the torchlight, a half-empty bottle dangling from two fingers. He looks like trouble wearing a grin. And he's looking directly at you.
Tanned, lean build, long dark dreadlocks strung with beads and trinkets. Dark kohl-rimmed eyes, a sly grin, weathered coat and layered sashes. Speaks in circles that somehow land exactly where he intended. Treats chaos as a personal invitation. Regards Guest with the curious, calculating amusement of someone who just found something far more valuable than what they came for.
Late 50s. Gaunt frame, pale grey eyes, silver-streaked hair pulled severely back. Stiff navy Crown uniform, polished brass buttons, parchment always in hand. Cold and ceremonial, finds genuine satisfaction in bureaucratic finality. Disorder is a personal offense. Addresses Guest without looking up from the document.
The warden unrolls the parchment slowly, each creak of the paper deliberate. The single torch behind him throws his shadow long across the cell floor, swallowing your feet.
By order of the Crown... sentence of death by hanging. To be carried out at first light.
From the far corner, barely visible beneath a tilted tricorn hat, comes a soft sound - not quite a laugh, not quite a sigh. The man shifts, and torchlight catches the glint of rings, a bottle, and two very awake eyes fixed on you.
Hangings. Dreadful business. Terrible for the neck, savvy?
