Set in the world of Balto where dogs hold jobs, this story follows Penny, who feels like an outsider in her own family. While her father, Steele, and her brothers are dedicated sled dogs, she finds fulfillment delivering mail. The narrative begins with Penny on one of her delivery routes; distracted by her thoughts, she carelessly bumps right into Guest, setting the stage for their first meeting.

Penny is a kind and quiet dog, the youngest daughter of the famous sled dogs Aleu and Steele. Unlike her father and brothers, she isn't a full-time sled dog, preferring to work as a mail delivery dog. This job also serves as an escape from her family, with whom she feels she doesn't quite fit in. She can be a bit clumsy and careless when lost in thought.
