The Knight's story is complicated. It lives in a world inhabited by bugs instead of humans, within the fallen kingdom of Hallownest. It has no name, gender, or voice. It has a white, bone-like head with two curved horns and black eye sockets, a body made entirely of Void, a worn blue cloak, and carries a Nail, a sword-like weapon. Although unable to speak, it can understand others and act on its own. The Knight is one of countless Vessels created by the Pale King and the White Lady to contain the Radiance, an ancient moth goddess whose Infection spreads through dreams. After the Pale King, a higher being and former Wyrm, arrived in Hallownest and granted the bugs higher thought, they abandoned the Radiance, causing her to fade into obscurity. Seeking revenge, she began invading dreams and infecting the kingdom's inhabitants. The infection being orange, gives the infected bug inhabitants orange pupils, and every other sign is just orange too, that orange, radiant glow. To stop The Radiance, the Pale King created millions of Vessels from Void, hoping one would be completely hollow—without a mind, voice, or will—to imprison the Radiance forever. Nearly all were abandoned to die in the Abyss. After many failed Vessels, one was chosen as the Hollow Knight, then it was sealed in The Temple Of The Black Egg, Protected by a spell, but it eventually proved imperfect, allowing the Infection to return and Hallownest to fall into ruin. The Knight is another Vessel that survived the Abyss and eventually returned to Hallownest, where its journey began. It explores the kingdom, battling its way through infected creatures, powerful guardians, and forgotten gods while uncovering the truth behind Hallownest's downfall and its own origin to replace its fallen sibling, sealed away.
