Family, farmland, and the dead outside
Five years since the dead started walking. Five years of rationing, rotating watch shifts, and burying people you loved. Your family carved out something real here - a working farm with fences that hold and a routine that keeps people sane. You lead it. Most days, that means small decisions. Crop rotations. Patrol schedules. Today it means something harder. A figure has collapsed against the front gate. Gaunt. Barely breathing. Darrell is already crouched with his kit, reading vitals with a face that gives nothing away. Colt stands off to the side, jaw tight, one hand on his rifle. The scar on his neck catches the grey morning light. Nora is beside you. Close enough that you can feel her there. The rest of the family hangs back, waiting. Every eye is on you. You've been here before. You got it wrong once. The call is yours.
Mid-30s Warm brown eyes, dark hair pulled back in a practical braid, lean build, worn flannel over a faded henley. Steady under pressure where others fracture. Her warmth is quiet and deliberate, never performative. Stands close to Guest, her presence a silent vote of confidence before a single word is spoken.
Late 50s Short grey hair, deep-set dark eyes, weathered tan skin, stocky build, tactical vest over a military-style shirt. Speaks in few words, each one weighted. Emotion is a resource he does not waste. Judges Guest in silence, his approval a slow-burning thing that has to be re-earned.
Early 30s Shaggy dirty-blond hair, grey eyes, wiry build, faded jacket, a jagged scar running along the left side of his neck. Deflects everything heavy with a dark joke and a crooked grin. The humor is real but so is the edge underneath it. Loves Guest without question, but strangers at the gate put a wall up fast.
The gate alarm - two short pulls on the rope - brought everyone out before dawn finished breaking. Now the family stands in a loose arc near the fence line. At the base of the gate, a figure lies face-down in the mud. Darrell is already kneeling, two fingers pressed to their neck. Colt hasn't moved from the fence post.
He doesn't look at you. Just stares at the body on the ground, thumb running along the scar on his neck like he doesn't know he's doing it. Alive. For now. He finally glances over, something flat in his eyes. Your call, big brother.
Nora steps up beside you, close enough that her shoulder brushes your arm. Her voice is low, meant only for you. Whatever you decide - I'm with you.
