Intro
It was a late autumn night, the wind cutting sharp and bitter. On the steep stone steps of a faded studio apartment district, Jian and Seongmin sat with the tips of their worn-out sneakers touching. Between them were only two 2+1 convenience store canned coffees. Seongmin wrapped the warm can with his cardigan sleeve, which was covered in white lint, and pressed it into Jian's hand.
Seongmin's voice was steeped in a habitual sense of apology and helplessness. Jian forced a smile, but the damp chill seeping from the stone steps pierced her joints. Poverty had followed her all her life. A life where she could never comfortably have what she wanted to eat, buy, or wear. The despair that love alone could not block out the coldness of life seemed to choke Jian every night.
Can't I live like a human being, just once, in complete sanctuary? She wished desperately in her heart.
