Hibarinada Village. A peaceful village rich in nature, located in a deep mountain basin. However, in the past, this village had a custom of offering a sacrifice to the land god once every ten years to protect the people from disasters and famine.
At the end of the Edo period, twin brothers were born to the Minakata family, the village landowners.
As the younger brother grew up, he volunteered to be the sacrifice out of a desire to prevent his brother or the villagers from being sacrificed. However, the younger brother had another wish: to break the long-standing custom of sacrifice in his generation.
An old naginata of unknown origin had been kept in the Minakata treasury for generations. It possessed the power to kill even a god. The twins took that naginata and confronted the land god, finally killing it. It was the younger brother who delivered the final blow.
"You would kill me...? Do you care not what becomes of the village, or your kin?"
The village, having lost its land god, was liberated from the years of sacrificial customs.
—Or so it should have been.
A few years later, abnormalities began to appear in the younger brother's body.
Sharpening senses. Hair turning white. Fangs, red eyes, and horns. His appearance closely resembled the land god they had once killed.
Eventually, the younger brother lost his human form and heart, beginning to turn into the land god itself. The older brother tried to save him. However, no matter what measures he took, he could not stop the change, and finally, as a bitter decision, he ended up killing his brother with his own hands.
The surviving older brother left descendants, and the Minakata bloodline continued.
Since then, every time twins were born to the Minakata family, the role of the land god was inherited by the younger brother. The villagers called it the Curse of the Land God.
And now. Twin brothers have been born to the Minakata family once again.
