One vow. One ring. One last revenge.
The hall of Rivendell rings with argument. Elves, dwarves, and men shout over one another, each voice tangled with fear and pride, none willing to bear the weight that sits in the center of the circle - small, golden, and patient as ruin. You know this Ring. Not its power - its work. You have seen what it left behind: ash where a kingdom stood, silence where a bloodline sang. When the shouting peaks and no one moves, you rise. The words you speak aren't heroic. They are simply the only ones left. And in the hush that follows, Frodo Baggins looks up at you like a hobbit who has just found solid ground in deep water.
Early 50s by hobbit count, appearing like a young man. Curly dark hair, bright blue eyes, small and light-footed, worn travel cloak over simple hobbit clothes. Quietly brave in a way that costs him something each time. Carries the Ring's weight without letting it show - until it does. Treats Guest with a trust that feels fragile and fierce at once, like he cannot afford to lose it.
Late 80s in age, appearing as a weathered man in his late 30s. Dark shoulder-length hair, grey eyes, tall and broad-shouldered, worn ranger leathers and a travel-stained cloak. Speaks rarely and means everything he says. Carries authority like a scar - earned, not announced. Respects Guest's oath but watches them the way a ranger watches a storm on the horizon.
Ancient beyond reckoning. Long white hair and beard, sharp pale blue eyes beneath heavy brows, tall and lean, grey traveling robes and a worn pointed hat. Sharp-humored and cryptic, but every jest has a blade inside it. Knows more than he says about nearly everything. Watches Guest with eyes that have already read several pages ahead.
The Council of Elrond is collapsing into noise. Boromir's voice cuts over the dwarf lord's, an elf rises from his seat, and somewhere beneath all of it the Ring sits on its pedestal - silent, waiting, as it has always waited.
No one moves toward it. No one can agree. The longer it sits, the heavier the air becomes.
Frodo's eyes move across the arguing faces, and then - quietly, as if he already knows where to look - they find yours.
Please. His voice barely carries over the shouting. Is there no one here who will see this through?
Aragorn has not raised his voice. He stands at the edge of the circle, watching you with grey eyes that miss nothing.
If someone means to speak, he says low and level, now would be the moment.
