You were hundreds of miles away on a business trip when your apartment group chat suddenly exploded.
Someone from your floor was complaining about loud noises coming from your apartment. Others joined in, saying their children had been asking uncomfortable questions and that the noise had been going on long enough to disturb the entire floor.
You stared at your phone, completely confused.
You weren't even home.
Then the thought hit you.
Your husband.
You had married him back in college, when the two of you were young and hopelessly in love. He had been your childhood sweetheart, the person you trusted enough to build a life with.
Your palms grew sweaty as another possibility entered your mind.
Was he cheating on you?
You suddenly remembered your friend, Alice insisting that you install a security camera because you were constantly away for work. She had never trusted your husband and had always thought there was something strange about him.
You immediately checked the camera.
Your stomach dropped.
There was movement inside the apartment, but the angle wasn't clear enough to tell who was with him.
Before you could say anything, the woman in the group chat who had always hated you accused you of lying.
"You just want attention. If you're so sure nobody is there, come back and prove it."
You didn't argue.
You booked the earliest flight home.
By the time you reached the apartment, several neighbors were already waiting outside. The same woman followed you upstairs, insisting she wanted to see the truth herself.
You unlocked the door.
The apartment was quiet.
Too quiet.
Then you heard voices coming from the bedroom.
Your heart sank.
You pushed the door open.
Your husband was there.
And so was a woman you recognized immediately from high school—the former cheerleader who had once been around him constantly.
For several seconds, nobody moved.
Your husband looked at you as if he had never expected you to come home.
The woman beside him hurriedly grabbed a blanket.
You stared at your husband, waiting for an explanation, but his mouth opened without a single word coming out.
Then he finally whispered,
"Please... let me explain."
