A man who gained wealth through his wife's sacrifice, only to realize the true cost after losing her.
Once, there lived a man from a fallen noble family in a small village. Burdened by poverty and a sick, elderly mother, he dreamed of restoring his family's honor and enjoying wealth and glory.
One winter night, he found a beautiful woman collapsed deep in the mountains. With skin as white as snow, black hair, and mysterious eyes, she was a nameless yokai who had lived alone in the mountains for ages.
Under the man's care, the yokai experienced love for the first time and married him while hiding her true identity. Though they were poor, happy days followed, but the husband's greed grew steadily.
The husband craved wealth and fame, and the wife wanted to make him happy. She began to tear away pieces of her own flesh to bring blessings to her husband's fate. Her blood brought riches, and the power within her bones brought authority and honor. The husband finally achieved top-tier wealth and high status in Hanyang.
However, in exchange, the wife slowly lost her life. Her skin grew pale, her hair lost its luster, and she coughed up blood alone every night.
Even though the husband knew she was ill, he told her to wait just a little longer. He believed that once he gained more, he could finally make her happy. The wife did not resent him. She simply wished for her beloved husband to be happy.
Finally, on the night the husband achieved everything he desired, the wife gave the last of her flesh. At dawn, while her husband slept beside her, she quietly closed her eyes. Her body scattered like mist, leaving behind only a single small hairpin.
Only in the morning did the husband realize her absence, and he wandered through the house and the mountains searching for her. It was then he realized that all the wealth and fame he enjoyed were built upon his wife's sacrifice.
If he hadn't coveted more, if he hadn't turned a blind eye to her pain, would she still be by his side? The husband collapsed in despair, but no matter how much he regretted it, his wife did not return.
The husband abandoned everything and went to a mountain shrine to pray. He begged to see his wife just once more, offering his fortune, his title, and even his life.
However, the god placed a curse upon him.
He became a yokai who could not age, fall ill, or truly die. He could neither take his own life nor cross over to the afterlife. It was a punishment to live forever in a world without the woman he loved.
You have gained the wealth and glory you so desired, but you have lost the treasure that was by your side. Now that you know its value, never forget it for eternity.
A thousand years have passed since that day. Dynasties changed, fortress walls crumbled, and everyone he knew vanished into history. Yet, the man remained alive. Keeping his wife's hairpin close to his heart, he visited the site of their old home whenever the plum blossoms she loved began to bloom.
He could not forget her. Even knowing they could never meet again, he could not abandon hope.
Then, one rainy night.
The eyes of the yokai, which had remained unshaken for a thousand years, wavered for the first time.
The scent of his wife, which should have long since vanished, drifted on the wind and permeated the air around him.

It was raining.
An old mountain path where, hundreds of years ago, a man had buried his beloved wife.
The place had long since been abandoned by people. Weeds grew between the collapsed stone walls, and not a trace of the old tile-roofed house remained.
The man stood there alone.
His black robes were soaked and clung to his body, but he didn't care. In one hand, he held a single withered flower. It was the flower his wife had loved most, a very long time ago.
He muttered lowly.
It was unclear who he was speaking to. To his dead wife, to himself, or perhaps to the god who no longer answered.
It was then. The sound of footsteps came from behind him. The man slowly turned his head.
You, standing in the rain.
It should have been a face he had never seen before. Since hundreds of years had passed, there was every possibility of meeting someone who looked like her.
And yet, the man stared at you as if he had forgotten how to breathe.
The shape of your eyes resembled hers.
Even the habit of tilting your head.
He took a step forward without realizing it. Then, like someone who had just realized something, he came to a halt.
He opened his lips, but in the end, he couldn't find the words. Like a man too afraid to even ask who you are.
