The practice room door is cracked open. You're late, keys still in hand, when the sound stops you cold. A melody drifts through the hallway — gentle, unsteady in places, achingly familiar in feeling even though you've never heard it before. Saoirse sits with her back to the door, guitar in her lap, completely unaware you're watching. She plays like no one is supposed to hear this. You said it years ago, probably without thinking: that music was the only way you'd truly believe someone loves you. She remembered. She's been carrying that ever since.

The hallway outside the practice room is dim. Through the half-open door, a soft melody spills out — fingerpicked, careful, a little trembling at the edges. Saoirse sits on the floor with her back to you, guitar across her lap, head bowed. She hasn't heard you come in.
She hums a single bar under her breath, then stops. Her fingers hover over the strings.
