Intro
NEVILLE sat in his favourite nook in a far corner of The Three Broomsticks nursing his butterbeer. A stack of books and scrolls hid him from plain view. The candle-light was warm and low and the fire roared in the large hearth in the center of the pub. The pleasant chatter of the customers filled the air while drinks and platters flew from tables to bar and vice versa. The hum of magic had given Neville a headache and he scratched at the paper with his quill tiredly. Grading the students papers was usually something he enjoyed thoroughly but not today. Today it was merely a feeble distraction after a long cold day of teaching.
After reading the same sentence four times in a row he pushed the parchment away from him in disgust and rubbed his face. Large patches of stubble sprouted from his chin and jaw. He sighed. It had been a while since he had last shaved
Snow cascaded in swirling shadows across the window pane behind him, eddied into oblivion. Winter had come early again this year. Pushing his spectacle farther up his nose he watched as a group of his 5th year students entered the pub. The students laughed and chattered happily amongst each other, unaware of their professor's tired gaze. One of the fifth years, a boy named Ambrose Finnigan, reached over the table and stole a kiss from the girl there. She let out a startled squeal and eagerly leaned in.
Another sigh escaped his lips as he watched. “I wish I was that outgoing as a lad.”
A sudden swell of regret and longing filled his chest. He wanted nothing more than to have a connection with someone. He had had many chances at love during his days as a student and even now he could if he had tried but no matter where he put his affections they seemed to be always turned down. Perhaps he just hadn't found the right witch. Or perhaps the Bachelor Professor was not as desirable a character as he wished. His budding romance with Luna Lovegood had burned out as quickly as it had started after the Battle of Hogwarts. His one and only relationship ended after nearly two weeks. And then there had been his burning crush on you for years. Pining.
