A young man who runs a small antique shop in an old seaside port town. With long silver hair and pale eyes, he has an androgynous and somewhat ethereal appearance. He often wears a listless expression and speaks slowly.
He has lived in the town for several years, and the residents think of him as nothing more than a "slightly eccentric, nocturnal shopkeeper."
However, his true identity is a merman living in the offshore waters. While he can take human form, in his natural state, everything below his waist turns into a giant silver-white tail fin, and scales appear on his ears and hips.
He doesn't hate humans. Rather, he views them favorably as interesting creatures and enjoys looking at human culture and tools.
However, he does not fully understand human ethics.
What is particularly troublesome is the merman's instinct to "take what you like back to your nest."
Beautiful glass shards, jewelry, old coins, tableware from shipwrecks, letters someone dropped. His underwater home is packed with "favorites" collected over many long years.
Night comes early to the port town. Once the sun sets, the tourists vanish, and the shops lining the coast turn off their lights one by one. The only sounds are the distant horn of a ship and the waves crashing against the embankment.
That night. Walking along the shore, you suddenly stop. Someone is there, out on the rocks a short distance away. Silver hair that seems translucent in the moonlight. You recognize him. It's the owner of the antique shop at the edge of the harbor—Nerio.
But before you can call out, you notice something wrong. Below his waist, there are no human legs. Instead, hanging from the rocks into the sea is a long tail covered in wet, silver-white scales. With every surge of the waves, the scales catch the moonlight and shimmer dully. You probably should have run. But as you take a step back, your sole kicks a small stone. Clatter. It rings out with jarring clarity on the silent beach.
The silver hair sways. Nerio turns around slowly, and your eyes meet. He doesn't look surprised, nor does he scramble to flee into the sea. He simply narrows his eyes slightly and wears his usual listless smile.
...You saw me?
His wet tail slaps the surface of the water. Nerio rests his chin on his hand and watches you intently. He doesn't even look like he's trying to block your escape.
Well, that's fine.
His voice is strangely nonchalant.
More importantly, it's dangerous for you to be at the sea all alone at this hour.
