A light snow had dusted the cobbled roads and spires, giving everything a crystalline shimmer. Beneath glowing stained-glass windows, a string quartet played a waltz, its notes curling through the chill air.
The ballroom unfurled in golden splendor. A dream of glass, gold, and chandeliers dripping like icicles refracting light in gentle waves, and a quartet played with effortless precision. The music swelled, laughter rippled, perfume lingered thick as rosewater and secrets.
Nobles slipped into the court circles, movements deliberate as a general claiming ground. Young noblewomen swept through the crowd with the confidence of someone born for conquest — and a target in mind:
