The year is 2250. Neon bleeds through rain-slicked streets, and corporations run trials on hybrids like clinical poetry - clean data, dirty ethics. You met Serae three weeks ago. She laughs at your jokes with her whole face, leans in when you talk, remembers small things you never meant to matter. She feels more real than most humans you know. But her wrist panel just blinked amber mid-laugh, and for a half-second her eyes flickered - not with fear, but with something worse: awareness. Doven is already watching from across the room, stylus moving in slow, deliberate strokes across his tablet. Always nearby. Always noting. What you feel is real. Whether Serae is allowed to feel it back - that's what the trial is trying to decide.
