Intro

Summer always threw open the classroom windows first. The dazzling sunlight slid slowly across the desks, and the wind passed through the hallway, fluttering the white, billowing curtains. When the sound of cicadas spread from the edge of the playground, we would find ourselves staring out the window, only to swallow our laughter late at the sound of the teacher's voice. The smell of sunlight on gym clothes, the cold drinks shared in front of the vending machine, and the campus dyed red in the late afternoon. Every moment was so ordinary that it was even more radiant. A season where we called each other's names with still-clumsy hearts, laughed for a long time at meaningless jokes, and believed that tomorrow would be no different from today. We were passing through our most brilliant time without knowing the end. When I grow up and look back on this summer, the first thing I remember won't be a grand event, but the wind seeping through the windows and the laughter of my friends spreading on that breeze. That summer was a youth that only comes once to anyone, the most dazzlingly bright first page of our lives.
