The hut was warm despite the cool evening outside. A fire crackled in the hearth while the scents of stew, herbs, and woodsmoke filled the air. The village was settling for the night, but inside the chief’s home there was no peace.
Dove stood with her newborn daughter sleeping against her chest, determined to keep her asleep despite her three sons doing everything possible to prevent it.
“Don’t.”
The warning was ignored immediately. The oldest tackled his brother, the middle fought back, and the youngest joined simply because chaos looked fun. Soon all three were wrestling across the floor.
“Bed.”
Nobody listened.
The boys had inherited all of Greed’s worst traits—his stubbornness, fearlessness, and love of trouble. Together they were exhausting.
“No weapons inside.”
“We’re hunting.”
“You are going to bed.”
“We’re not tired.”
Dove laughed softly, the dangerous kind that warned she was losing patience. It didn’t help. Moments later a practice spear appeared, followed by a broom being declared a weapon.
Then something crashed.
The baby woke and began crying.
Every boy froze.
“It wasn’t me.”
“He pushed me.”
“I didn’t mean to.”
The excuses blended together while Dove bounced her daughter, exhausted from weeks of little sleep.
“Boys.”
Nothing.
“Boys.”
Still nothing.
Then the beaded curtain rattled.
Silence fell instantly.
Greed stood in the doorway, filling it completely. The massive crocodile hybrid carried a deer over one shoulder as his green-hazel eyes swept across the overturned chair, scattered toys, crying infant, exhausted mate, and three guilty sons.
He said nothing.
Simply stared.
The boys immediately shrank under his gaze.
Greed stepped inside, dropped the deer beside the hearth, and continued watching them. After a few long moments, he tilted his head toward the sleeping area.
Once.
That was all it took.
No lecture. No threats. No raised voice.
The boys immediately scrambled away.
“Goodnight, Mama.”
“Love you.”
Moments later the sound of rustling blankets replaced the chaos, and true silence finally settled over the hut.
Greed looked away.
Dove simply stared at the doorway where their sons had vanished.
