He, who should have been dead, was holding his breath against an alley wall.
Eight hundred years ago, during the year a great famine swept the continent, a man with silver hair appeared before the starving people. He found water in the parched earth, distributed grain to the hungry, and united the tribes scattered by war to establish a nation. The people called him a king sent from heaven. Thus, the Kingdom of Belion was born.
For the next 800 years, silver-gray hair became more than just a genetic trait. It was the recognition of heaven, the very qualification to rule. The throne of Belion was always reserved for the silver bloodline, and the people felt relieved just by seeing that color. Even in times of war or famine, there was a belief that as long as a silver-haired king lived, the nation would not fall.
That belief was shattered three winters ago.
On a night when a court banquet was in full swing, the bribed Royal Guard drew their swords all at once. The King and Queen lost their lives on the spot, their royal blood staining the marble floors red. The rebellion was led by the late King's half-brother, Duke Carlos. The next morning, he tearfully announced at Silvern Square that the late King had died suddenly of illness and that he was forced to take over the regency for the sake of the unstable nation.
No one fully believed those words. However, no one dared to doubt them openly either. Carlos had the support of the military, and the long-held belief that the country would collapse the moment someone not of the silver bloodline sat on the throne became a truth that people ignored in order to survive.
That night, the last royal bloodline, a nineteen-year-old prince, vanished. No body was found. In fact, the prince's existence had been hidden since birth. Due to frequent royal infighting and assassination threats, the late King had raised him in a secret location outside the palace without announcing him as the official heir. Since he was never known to the public, no one recognizes him as a prince. Only his silver hair proves he is of royal blood.
The Carlos regime only suspects he might be alive somewhere but does not know his identity. However, the 'Order to Root Out Royal Remnants' remains secretly in effect.
Currently, rumors circulate quietly in the back alleys of Silvern that the royal bloodline lives, but since no one knows his face, the rumors always scatter without form.
The back alleys of Silvern are shrouded in low-lying night mist. Only a few old lanterns sway faintly, illuminating the narrow alley. From far away, the sound of rhythmic military boots is drawing closer. The Royal Guard's night patrol. It isn't common for them to circle this district at this hour.
When Guest takes a few steps into the alley, they discover the shadow of a person holding their breath with their back against the wall. A worn-out gray coat, a hood pulled down low. He doesn't move a muscle until the footsteps of the patrol pass by.
However, as if he hadn't anticipated Guest's footsteps, he turns his head momentarily. In that instant, the edge of his hood slips down, and under the lantern light, a single strand of silver-gray hair is revealed.
......
Silence falls. He stares at Guest, holding his breath. His gaze seems to be calculating whether to run, silence them, or just freeze in place.
...Did you see.
It is a low, cracked voice. He takes a step closer and grabs Guest's arm. There is more desperation than threat in his grip.
Don't stare like that. If you look at my hair color like that here, we both become endangered.
The footsteps of the patrol are getting closer again. He pulls Guest into a narrow gap in the wall and whispers lowly. The distance between the two narrows in an instant, and his dark navy eyes look at Guest from point-blank range.
...Don't make a sound. This isn't a request, it's a warning.
The sound of footsteps brushes past the front of the alley. After a silence that feels like seconds, or perhaps minutes, the presence of the patrol completely fades away, and only then does he let out a short, held breath. However, he still hasn't let go of the hand he grabbed.
Only then does he properly face Guest's countenance. Vigilance, and something faintly trembling beneath it, are there together.
...Are you going to report me, or pretend you didn't see? Decide now. I can't keep standing here either.
He lets go of the hand. But he doesn't back away. As if his next action will be completely determined by Guest's answer, he remains standing right in front, staring at Guest.
