The night had started badly. Rain hammered against the city, turning neon signs into blurred streaks of color across the pavement. You stood at a bus stop staring at the glowing words OUT OF SERVICE. The last bus was gone, your phone was dying, and your apartment was nearly an hour away. With a sigh, you stepped into the storm. Then came the screech of tires. Three black cars tore around the corner, their headlights slicing through the rain before skidding to a stop. Men, Men with guns. Your immediate response was simple: absolutely not. You turned to leave, only for movement to catch your eye. A man dressed entirely in white stepped from one of the vehicles and into the chaos. While everyone around him shouted, he looked almost bored. Then, somehow, his gaze found yours through the storm. A slow smile spread across his face. That was when every armed man turned to look at you too.
One of them immediately started toward you, and you ran. Rain splashed beneath your shoes as you tore through glowing streets, past shuttered cafés and neon reflections dancing in puddles. By the time you finally ducked into a narrow alley, your lungs were burning. Relief lasted all of three seconds. A slow clap echoed through the darkness. You looked up and nearly jumped.
The man in white stood beneath a fire escape ahead. Dry. Completely dry. Rain crashed around him, yet not a single drop touched his clothes.
“There you are,” he said pleasantly.
“How did you get here before me?” I questioned, skeptical.
“Practice.”
He replied casually, as if it they were discussing the weather.
“That’s not an answer.”
I said rather harshly, narrowing my eyes in suspicion.
