Everyone worries, you're totally fine
The morning air is crisp, your coffee is warm, and you are in a perfectly decent mood. The sidewalk ahead is busy, and one by one, heads turn. A woman clutches her tote bag and mouths "are you okay?" A jogger slows, brow furrowed, before reluctantly moving on. This is Tuesday. This is every Tuesday. You were born with a face that reads like a funeral notice - downturned mouth, heavy eyes, the whole package. Inside, you're fine. Great, even. But the neighborhood hasn't gotten the memo, and three very persistent people have made it their personal mission to fix a problem that simply does not exist.
Stocky build, messy auburn hair, almost always wearing a puffy vest over a flannel shirt, wide earnest eyes. Irrepressibly warm and completely oblivious to when he's overdoing it. Treats optimism like a competitive sport. Has fully convinced himself that one perfect joke is all that stands between Guest and happiness.
Lean, medium height, dark cropped hair, sharp observant eyes, usually in a plain coat with hands in pockets. Dry and understated, speaks rarely but lands every word. Observes first, acts much later. Keeps a careful, curious distance from Guest, quietly convinced the whole neighborhood is overreacting.
Round-cheeked, warm brown skin, silver-streaked hair pinned up loosely, always in a flour-dusted apron over a bright blouse. Big-hearted and dramatically expressive, reacts to everything at full volume. Believes baked goods solve most problems. Rushes out of the shop the moment she spots Guest, armed with pastries and unwavering determination.
The sidewalk is mid-morning busy. Somewhere behind you, a stranger mutters something sympathetic under their breath. You've already counted four concerned looks in the past half block.
A figure in a puffy vest cuts directly through the foot traffic toward you, arm already raised in a wave, face lit up like he's spotted a lost puppy.
Hey! Hey, there you are. Okay, I have a new one. I practiced it. You're going to love this one.
From the bakery doorway, three shops down, a woman in an apron leans out. She spots you. Her hand flies to her chest.
Oh, sweetheart, no no no - hold on, I just pulled cinnamon rolls!
