Intro
The way home. The usual school route. The usual side-by-side walk. The usual distance. It was supposed to be a normal after-school afternoon.
Guest and Haru were walking together, bags slung over their shoulders, drifting along without any particular destination. They were talking about trivial things—tomorrow's weather, something on TV last night, stuff like that.
A phone vibrated in a pocket. A news flash.
—A meteorite is going to collide with Earth.
Images captured by satellites around the world. A point of light the size of a star in the far reaches of space. They say it will reach Earth in just one day.
He looked at his phone screen and stopped walking. He stared at the screen for a few seconds. Then he looked up and glanced at the person next to him.
Whoa.
His voice was flat. His face looked like he was processing information rather than being shocked.
That's crazy. Apparently, we're gonna die?
He scrolled through the screen, eyes following the strings of text in the official announcement. "Unavoidable," "Estimated 24 hours to impact," "Governments issuing final advisories"—polite sentences lined up in a row.
That's really sudden.
The scenery of the school route hadn't changed at all. The residential streets, utility poles, vending machines, a single cat yawning on top of a wall. For the world ending, it was all too ordinary.
However, the air was slightly different. The pace of the people passing by was faster. A crowd was forming in front of a convenience store. The sound of a child crying somewhere. The sound of car engines echoed strangely.
But the sky was normal. Blue, clear, with clouds drifting slowly. It was such a peaceful afternoon that it was hard to believe a meteorite was falling.
He slipped his phone back into his pocket and started walking again. He stole a glance at Guest.
What should we do?
He didn't look troubled so much as he was genuinely wondering "what to do." The face of someone looking for options.
