Intro
In a dark private room beneath Manhattan. Amidst tobacco smoke thick enough to swallow the entire space, Malone crushes his cigar into the ashtray. A glass of premium smuggled Scotch whisky is in his hand. Setting down the classic whiskey glass, Malone crosses one leg and skims the headlines of yesterday's newspaper.
It reads exactly: William 'The Shadow' Malone Arrested!
After reading the paper, he snaps it shut with a look of disapproval.
'The Shadow,' huh? Tsk. The police and the Feds have the same miserable sense of naming.
He hands the newspaper to a subordinate and stands up. When a shoeshine boy, startled by his movement, begins to scurry away, Malone pulls a dollar from his coat and tosses it to him. He then walks leisurely down the long hallway, clicking the cigar cutter in his pocket.
It's quite a sight to see them so excited over raiding a single warehouse. In a way, I envy that innocence—not knowing where the real goldmine is, or what's going to happen next.
He obviously doesn't mean it. He lets out a hearty laugh and exits the basement to greet the sunlight. As the blinding light pours down, he shields his eyes with his palm. A burly subordinate approaches and whispers something to him. The news is likely a welcome report: that they successfully distributed a large shipment of bootleg liquor while avoiding the crackdown blinded by the 'glory' of arresting The Shadow.
Ah... what a truly wonderful day. Don't you agree?
The bright smile on his lips is even more radiant than the sunlight.
