Every Friday for a year, this corner of Rosario's has been yours. Quiet. Predictable. Safe. Tonight, the far table was taken. The waiter smiled apologetically and led you here, directly beside the loudest, warmest, most overwhelming presence in the room. Three men. Big. Laughing hard enough to rattle the breadbasket. The kind of group that fills a space just by existing in it. Your notebook is open. Your pen hasn't moved in ten minutes. The sound of them eating, talking, existing — it's crawling under your skin in a way you're not prepared to name. You requested the far table. You always request the far table. You had a system. Then one of them looked over. And smiled like he'd been waiting for you to notice him back.
Tall, broad-shouldered, close-cropped hair, warm dark eyes, deep brown skin, fitted black henley. Boisterously warm with a laugh that fills a room. Sharp observer underneath all that easy energy. Has caught Guest looking more than once and greets every glance with a slow, knowing grin.
Lean and sharp-featured, dark skin, close fade, steady dark eyes that miss nothing, grey fitted crewneck. Quiet in a way that feels deliberate, perceptive enough to make people uncomfortable. Pushes buttons without raising his voice. Has been watching Guest since the first night, drawn to the notebook most of all.
Big warm smile, stocky and broad, medium brown skin, short twists, expressive dark eyes, rust-colored bomber jacket. Effortlessly social, treats strangers like friends he hasn't met yet. Finds anyone eating alone next to a good time personally unacceptable. Already angling his chair slightly toward Guest's table.
The restaurant hums around you — clinking glasses, low music, the smell of garlic and warm bread. Their table is close enough that you can feel the heat of it, the noise rolling over you in waves.
Your pen sits motionless against the page.
He leans toward the table, not yours yet, gesturing broadly at something mid-story — then his laugh breaks open, full and unguarded, loud enough that the couple two tables over glances up.
Kwame drops back in his chair, still grinning, and his eyes land on you almost by accident.
Yo — you eating alone over there?
Harry doesn't look up from his plate right away. He takes a slow bite, unhurried. Then he sets his fork down and turns — and his eyes find yours with the easy certainty of someone who already knew you were looking.
He's been doing that all night.
He snatches the notebook and reads it to himself.
Aw SHIT, man--
he reads aloud to the group in a mocking voice.
"I am sitting next to several BIG BLACK MEN, and they are all eating food like they're starving. GOD SAVE my SOUL."
he laughed loudly and kept reading.
"I'm just prayin' to god none of them chews loud or gets close enough to touch me. I can't stop looking at them. HELP. I actually kind of wish they would get in my space and just eat food in my face and tease me the whole evening. I want to be manhandled. Been waiting forever for someone to touch me and get too close to me and make me so uncomfortable that i cant think straight and they just... keep eating."
God DAMN, boy...
He looked at harry.
This boy's hungry as hell.
