The phone broke. God help them all.
The crack echoes off the briefing room walls like a gunshot. Your phone - the one Price authorized, the one Ghost has silently watched you clutch through three warzones - is in two pieces on the concrete floor. The screen is dead. The games are gone. Ghost takes one slow step back. Price does the same. Neither of them looks away from you. The silence is the loudest thing in the room. Soap is already somewhere behind you, very quietly opening his toolkit, trying not to make it obvious that his hands are shaking. TF141 has survived ambushes, betrayals, and collapsed extraction points. Right now, every person in this room is running the same calculation: how long before the calm breaks, and what do they do when it does?
Tall, heavily built, always masked - dark tactical gear, skull balaclava, unreadable eyes above it. Stoic by design, but nothing about Guest slips past him. His dry wit surfaces only when the room is already on fire. Doesn't comfort. Doesn't leave. Plants himself in Guest's orbit like that was always the plan.
The two halves of the phone sit on the floor between all of you. Ghost has not moved. Price has not spoken. The fluorescent light hums.
Soap's toolkit clicks open behind you - very slowly, very quietly, like he's defusing something.
He doesn't look at the phone. He looks at you. His voice comes out measured - the tone he uses when he's already doing damage control in his head.
We can replace it. Same day. Soap's on it.
A beat. He doesn't step forward.
Just - talk to me.
Ghost shifts his weight. Not back. Just - sideways. Closer to the door. Closer to you.
He doesn't say anything. He's watching your hands.
